What is Semaglutide

Semaglutide is a small protein (peptide) that activates metabolic pathways in the body to increase blood sugar metabolism and reduce appetite. It imitates a hormone called glucagon- like peptide-1 (GLP-1).This additional insulin causes the stomach to empty over a longer period. This slow and consistent digestion is merely an early step in the chain reaction that makes semaglutide an effective weight-loss drug. When your stomach takes more time to empty itself of food, it sends signals of “fullness” to the brain. This signal is sent throughout a larger portion of your day, even if you’re eating less food than usual. Semaglutide is NOT a stimulant, so you do not have to worry about unpleasant side effects like not being able to sleep or having the jitters. This means patients using semaglutide or semaglutide alternatives can benefit from medically assisted weight loss without any need for invasive surgery.

Of the three types of Semaglutide, Wegovy is the only one approved by the FDA for use as a weight loss medicine. The most effective way to use Wegovy is by incorporating it as part of a weight loss regimen that includes exercise and proper nutrition. It can be used for patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/2m or higher or a BMI of 27 kg/2m or greater, plus a pre- existing weight-related health condition.

According to a recent study, Wegovy was used during a 2-year trial to examine its effect on weight loss. During the two years, those taking Wegovy lost just over 15% of their body fat, while those taking the placebo lost just over 2% of their body fat. While Wegovy itself doesn’t increase your energy levels, increased energy is often a by-product of a comprehensive weight loss program that includes exercise and diet changes.

How does it work?

Wegovy signals the brain into thinking that you are fuller than you are by imitating ghrelin and leptin, two hormones that help control your appetite. Wegovy signals to the brain the feeling of “fullness”, therefore reducing your appetite and desire to eat. To see the most ideal results, pair Wegovy with exercise and a healthy diet.

Patients typically see a weight loss of 1 to 3 pounds per week. However, that can vary depending on the weight of the patient. Patients who have more weight to lose can see greater results.

On average, you can expect to lose 15% of your body weight

When considering the long-term costs associated with obesity and treatment for health conditions, Wegovy is an investment that could save you tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical bills.
